Today is World Water Day. Please take a little time to think about your relationship with your water resources today, something that most of us take for granted. Consider how you can use water wisely and how you can help others with their water problems.

Do you regularly eat foods whose farming is disproportionately-polluting? Do you know where your run-off goes? Are you contributing to others’ water hardships? Is your car dripping oil or your spigot dripping water? Does your lawn require a lot of water or fertilizers?

I have a lot to change in my life to shrink my environmental footprint. Perhaps you do, too. Today is a good day to think of new ways to continue that work. Water is a critical issue for a very large portion of the world’s population, and the seemingly-little things we do are not so little if we all do them.

I’m up to my eyeballs in work, but need to take the time to post here and ask folks to send a little help to some folks who need it:

One of the local papers recently ran a story about Ian Herbst, a sick baby who needs a liver transplant and whose parents need some help in covering the co-pay, care, and medications. If you want the details, see the articles in the Floyd Press or the Roanoke Times.

Several fundraising events are being planned. A yard sale is planned for this Saturday at the Central United Methodist Church, at Wadsworth and Eighth Streets in Radford. A golf tournament is planned in Riner on June 30. Also the friends are selling crafts in a project called Crafters for a Cause. The friends welcome handmade crafts such as jewelry, cards, woodwork and other items. The crafts will be sold at the Dublin flea market and at Bissett Park in Radford. For more information call Clemmer at 540-633-6130. Tax-deductible donations may be made in person at any Wachovia Bank branch location using account number 3000025425609 or mailed to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, 2501 COTA Drive, Bloomington, IND 47403. Checks or money orders should be made payable to “COTA for Ian H.” Secure credit card donations are also accepted online at www.cota.org.
